Busy Times Kalane

We have had quite a busy time this past week here at Hamilton Stables, with runners on the Flat, over jumps and also attending the big horses in training sale here in Newmarket. Pyla kicked things off at Chelmsford last Thursday, where she ran a great race to finish second, on her first attempt in a 0-75. That was her last run for us, as she went to the horses in training sale on Monday, where she was bought by Luke Comer. It was with regret that she went to the sales, but I am delighted where she has gone and I understand that plan is for her to be covered by the Gr.1 winner Dick Whittington, whom Luke bought as a stallion prospect on the same day.

Along with Matt Coleman, who I couldn't speak highly enough off we managed to secure three lovely horses on Monday and Tuesday at Tattersalls. The first, Thaqaffa who was from Shadwell's beautifully bred draft has shown good form over a mile and having watched his races we decided it was best to geld him, I hope this will be the making off him. He has already shown that he runs well on both turf and all-weather so I imagine all being well we will keep him going over the winter. Carnival King, a dual winner over 7 furlongs, was bought from Brian Meehan and is set for a well earned break for 6 weeks out enjoying himself in the paddock. The third and final purchase was a filly called Gwendolyn, from Robert Cowell, she has won on both the turf and all-weather. She's a speedy type and we will look to get her ready to run in the not to distant future. There are still some shares available in Carnival King, while Thaqaffa is for sale as one or in shares. If you are interested, please get in touch.

My first National Hunt runners ran at Fakenham on Wednesday and both delighted me. Mercian King started out over fences and an extended two miles. He ran a little fresh and keen early, but his jumping progressed through the race and stayed on again, having blown up on the run for home. We will look for a similar contest in the coming weeks. It was a great first run for The Thoroughbred Club, whose Flat horse, Unsuspected Girl, was also third at Chelmsford for David Simcock ten minutes earlier in the day. Our second runner on the day Jade’s Legend who has only been in the yard for three weeks or so and we were on a fact finding mission, having raced over hurdles, jumps and cross country races in France. Given a patient ride by Jack Quinlan, who has been a great help assisting with schooling at home, she came through to challenge the leader after three out and ran like she needed further. She may revert to hurdles next time.

Looking ahead, Zeb’s Fantasy runs tomorrow night at Chelmsford and will be making her first start, having come over from Ireland, while Kalane is set to run in the new Listed mares chase at Market Rasen going straight over three miles. I'm probably taking a risk starting her out over three miles first run of the season, its a big ask fitness wise having always looked after her at home due to her unsoundness, I just hope she will settle and get into a nice rhythm early on and see the trip out. I’m looking forward to getting Mariah’s Legend on the track, she will hopefully run at Warwick on Friday in a bumper.
