Kalane gives yard first Listed success
Firstly, I would like to wish you all a very happy new year!
December proved to be a golden month for us and provided the perfect closure to the year. By the end of three months of having had runners, we have amassed six wins, with numerous placings. The one thing that has pleased me is that even if the horses haven’t won, they have been running consistently well.
The crowning moment of the month came at Doncaster on the 29th, with Kalane gaining a first black-type win over fences in the Listed Mares’ Chase, a contest she came down in last season and nearly did this time around, but Jack performed an amazing sit. I was in two minds whether to run due to the ground, but let her take her chance as this is her final season racing, she will be covered by Sulamani at some stage over the next few months. There are various options for her later in the season on either side of the Irish Sea.
Kalane was also part of another first earlier in the month being one of our winners in the Saturday double. She romped home, also at Doncaster, on the 10th and was subsequently put up twelve pounds by the handicapper to a mark of 140, which had been the aim, as it’s the mark at which she is classed as an Elite Mare by the TBA. Later that day Shan Dun Na Ngall (Sean) followed up his Chelmsford win at Newcastle under, where he was stepped up to two miles under a confident ride from Lemos. Two wins in his first two starts for us, which is not bad for a horse that cost just £3,500. Sean attempted at making it three on the bounce at Wolverhampton on 27th, but the slow pace of the race did not really play to his strengths. Mercian King, who ran a very creditable second on Boxing Day at Fontwell in ground he really didn’t enjoy. He and Kalane have both been turned out at grass for a couple of weeks for a well-earned break.
Over the coming days, we have a few runners, firstly Mercian Prince runs at Sandown, I am very much looking forward to seeing how he fairs in better company following his easy win at Southwell last time out. Sunday is very much a ladies day, we run Jade’s Legend at Fontwell and I have booked Lizzie Kelly to ride her, she’s a small filly having to carry a lot of weight so hopefully Lizzie’s valuable 5lb will give her some help along the way.
There are still a few shares in horses available, including in a couple of nice early two year old types, I am also in the process of setting up a racing club which I’m really looking forward to launching. If you are interested in becoming involved, please do get in contact with us.
